Marian Anderson came to Bangkok as part of her U.S. State Department Far East Tour, marking a historic moment of cultural exchange through music. Already celebrated worldwide for her extraordinary voice and quiet courage, Ms. Anderson’s Bangkok performance transcended concert tradition, serving instead as a gesture of goodwill, artistry, and shared humanity in the postwar era. Through her presence and performance, she forged a lasting cultural connection between the United States and Thailand, demonstrating how music can speak across borders, languages, and histories.

Developed by U.S.-based nonprofit Gitameit Friends USA, Great Day—Honoring Marian Anderson celebrates and carries forward the legacy of trailblazing American contralto Marian Anderson. Through an evolving program of performances, education, and dialogue, we sustain and expand the cultural bridges Ms. Anderson built, using music to foster understanding, connection, and shared humanity across borders.
This See It Now television program from December 30, 1957 as narrated by Edward R. Murrow. It documented Marian Anderson's recent tour of Asia. The tour was sponsored by the American National Theater and Academy (ANTA) and the United States Information Agency (USIA).
